At the Site
When we first discovered Auca Mahuevo, most of the fossils
we found were fragments of shell on the surface. We had to
dig down a few feet to reveal clutches of near perfect eggs.
The eggs measured five to six inches across- about the same
size as a modern ostrich egg-and weighed a couple of pounds
when first laid.
After a brief survey of the site it appeared this was a nesting
field that spanned for miles and contained thousands of eggs.
