Specimen Prep

A discovered fossil must be protected for the journey to the museum. Fossils are hard as rock, but can often crumble or shatter. To protect them, we use toilet paper, plaster and burlap to create a "jacket." Like a cast on a broken bone, the jacket keeps the fossil stable and rigid. When the jacket arrives in the lab, it will be opened and careful work to reveal the fossils will begin.
