Reconstruction
What did the landscape look like? From the geology we know
the nesting area was a low floodplain.
Research has also revealed that the landscape included sparsely
dispersed trees, horsetails and other dinosaurs.
Envisioning dinosaur behavior is more difficult since behavior
doesn't usually leave a fossil record. We believe that large
groups of adults dug nests in which to deposit their eggs.
Although it appears the parents didn't sit on the nests or
care for their eggs, it is still unclear what role adults
had after the babies hatched.
Most of the time the dinosaur colony nested successfully.
But like floodplains today, this site was covered occasionally
with overflowing water and silt from a nearby river, preserving
the eggs as fossils for millions of years.
