Titanosaurs
The rocks our eggs came from contain fossils of sauropod
dinosaurs called Titanosaurs. These dinosaurs are extremely
common in South America, although they've also been found
in southern North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
Among the titanosaurs that are known from the Late Cretaceous
rocks from Auca Mahuevo is Neuquensaurus, a close relative
of Saltasaurus.
The titanosaur Saltasaurus is well known because it was comletely
covered with bony armor imbedded in its skin, presumably for
protection from the large meat eating dinosaurs that lived
at the time.
The pattern of armor plating in the skin of Saltasaurus is
remarkably similar to the patter of bumps on the skin of our
Patagonian babies.
