Wesley the Owl Book Signing
Natural History Museum

On Valentine's Day morning in 1985, biologist Stacey O'Brien's life changed forever. She had a fateful encounter with a permanently injured baby barn owl, and agreed to take him in. Not only would she be saving the little creature – whom she named Wesley – but she would have an opportunity to closely study an owl in a way few scientists had before. Stacey is on hand for a discussion and book signing event, and guests can also meet a live barn owl from the South Bay Wildlife Rehab Center. In the Jean Delacour Auditorium. Free with paid Museum admission.

B-Movies and Bad Science
Jean Delacour Auditorium
Join members from the Museum's history and science staff for a light-hearted exploration of the “science” behind some of Hollywood's creature features. You will discover what makes these creatures and plots implausible in reality, and get to see some of their “real life” counterparts in the Museum's collection. In “Them” (1954), giant ants run wild in the Southwest, then move to the L.A. sewer system for a climactic battle royale. Entomology Curator Brian Brown is on hand to talk about ants and other insects.

Sustainable Sundays
Natural History Museum

In this new series, the Museum becomes a forum in which visitors engage with speakers and researchers about international conservation issues, and then learn how those issues are at work right here in Los Angeles. Museum scientists and experts will talk about their research into pertinent environmental issues, and local nonprofits and advocacy groups will offer resources for anyone interested in learning more about sustainability. In this series kick-off, Conservation International’s Carlos Manuel Rodriguez talks about the “Costa Rica Model,” in which government policymakers and local indigenous people worked together to protect and revive Costa Rica’s forests in the 1990s.
